Creative weekends for children at the Cycladic Art Museum

January 2013

The Cycladic Art Museum offers a variety of programs for children in January.

-Saturday, January 19 2013 (11.00-12.30): Around the World in 8 Months: The Princesses of the Mediterranean (Ages: 4-5), led by Despoina Sakellariou and Antonia Velliou.

Children will make a tour in three East Mediterranean countries, Greece, Italy and Cyprus, through an exhibition hosted by the Cycladic Art Museum, “Princesses of the Mediterranean in the Dawn of History”. They will learn about their lives and habits, the clothes they wore, their jewelry and the objects they used. They will also see images of the exhibition, listen to fairy tales about princesses and princes and create their own artworks!

This workshop introduces children to the techniques of ancient jewelry making, by using clay, aluminium foil and wire. Children will exercise their fine motor skills, and realize how each material has different properties and is useful for different jobs.

Participation cost: €10 (€7 per child for brothers and sisters participating in the same workshop). All materials are provided.

-Sunday, January 20 2013 and January 27 2013 (11.00-12.30): Creating Art with my Hands. Once Upon a Time… a Princess (Ages: 2-3,5, Parent-Child Workshop), led by Despoina Sakellariou and Antonia Velliou.

Inspired by the exhibition “Princesses of the Mediterranean in the Dawn of History” children and their parents will travel to magical and fairy-tale places, they will make jewelry for the young princesses and toys for the young princes! They will discover the special properties of clay and use their imagination to create with it!

Participation cost (parent-child): €15 (€12 per child for brothers and sisters participating in the same workshop with both parents). Children must attend with at least one parent. All materials are provided.

-Saturday, January 26 2013 (11.00-13.00): Artistic Expression Workshop: Flying marionettes! (Ages: 5-10), led by the artist-art therapist Niovi Stavropoulou.

Marionette theatre is one of the oldest forms of puppet show! The children make wooden bird marionettes.

Participation cost: €12 (€10 per child for brothers and sisters in the same workshop). All materials are provided. This program can also be attended by English-speaking children.

-Sunday, January 27 2013 (11.00-13.00): Artistic Expression Workshop: The “Princess” who travelled from Greece to Cyprus (Ages: 5-10), led by the artist-art therapist Niovi Stavropoulou.

A fairy-tale with princes and princesses takes children back to antiquity. Children are encouraged to use various materials such as paper bags, cardboards, and cartons, paper plates and cups, sticks, plastic bottles etc. to create the fairy-tale heroes as they imagine them. Then children will use these marionettes to play puppet theatre! Children can bring materials intended for recycling.

Participation cost: €12 (€10 per child for brothers and sisters in the same workshop). All materials are provided. This program can also be attended by English-speaking children.
