Sport in the Ancient World

Nikephoros 25 Year Anniversary, Karl-Franzens University of Graz, Austria

Nikephoros – Journal of Sport and Culture in Antiquity will celebrate the release of volume 25 with an international conference to be held at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz from the 26th to the 28th of June 2014.

Since 1988 Nikephoros has been publishing scholarly contributions on all aspects of sport, understood in the broadest sense of the term, in the ancient world. The thematic purview of Nikephoros comprises technical aspects of sport events, issues related to the organization of local and interstate games, social and cultural dimensions of ancient sport as well as the reception of ancient sport in modern educational concepts and the modern Olympic movement. Besides ancient Greece and Rome, Nikephoros also publishes scholarly contributions on any aspect of sport in the ancient Near East, Egypt, far East and pre-Columbian American cultures.

The Nikephoros editors invite abstract submissions on any aspect of ancient sport for paper presentations at the Nikephoros 25 year anniversary conference. Submissions on well-known themes as well as with on hitherto neglected aspects of ancient sport are equally welcomed.

Presentations will last 20 minutes. The proceedings of the conference will be published in Nikephoros.

Please send an abstract (max. 3,000 characters) and a short bio to Peter Mauritsch (peter.mauritsch@uni-graz.at).

The deadline for abstract submissions is 30 November 2013. All applicants will be notified of the status of their submissions by 15 December 2013.
