International Museum Day in Cyprus

Events

The Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), announces that, within the framework of International Museum Day, 2016 (18th May), under the theme Museums and Cultural Landscapes and the European Night of Museums (21st May 2016) numerous events will be organised with free entrance. The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples. Organised on and around the 18th of May each year, International Museum Day celebrations can last a day, a weekend or a whole week. Participation in International Museum Day is growing internationally. In 2015, more that 35,000 Museums participated in the celebrations, in around 145 countries. In Cyprus, this year’s programme includes events organized by 25 Museums, from the 10th to the 28th of May 2016.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2016 (7.30 p.m.) Maria Loizidou (artist) will give a lecture (in Greek): “Από το RODI στο IDOR το δοχείο της ρευστότητας”. The event is organized by Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, within the framework of the exhibition: “Valentinos Charalambous. Of clay and glaze, of fire, affection and love”.

On Friday 13 – Saturday 14 May 2016 an educational sleepover for kids aged 10-13 is organized by the A.G. Leventis Gallery: “A night at the Museum”. Photography, painting, games and many more activities. A magical night – a magical journey!
