On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Christian Archaeological Society, (1884-1994), an exhibition opened at the Athens Byzantine Museum. Recent acquisitions were on show as well as Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscripts, also the rare golden seal of Andronicus B’ Paleologos, belonging to the Christian Archaeological Society’s collection. 147 works of art were also on show, most of them being exhibited for the first time. These are works of sculpture, paintings and miniatures, dating from the early Christian to the Late Byzantine period. The curator of the museum presented the most important works. Among these is El Greco’s Dormition of the Virgin, belonging to the church of the Dormition in Syros.
