The pigments prevailing in painting until the end of the eighteenth century. Properties and mediums of pigments

In order to understand and appreciate the painting of past centuries we must have a good knowledge of the pigments that prevailed at least until the end of the eighteenth century, their qualities and properties, such as the form of their grains, specific gravity, colour strength, opacity as well as the mediums used for their application. Finally we must always take into consideration the effect of falling or reflecting light on the surface of the painting.
