The deadline for submitting abstracts to the session “Modeling Conflict in Archaeology: Roads to Data Comparability” at the Kiel Conference 2025 has been extended to 31st October 2024. The conference will take place in Kiel (DE) in 24th-29th March 2025.
This session aims to foster an international dialogue on conflict modeling in archaeology, with a focus on the development and application of models to investigate conflict through archaeological (but also historical and epigraphical) data. While we are particularly interested in papers discussing modeling approaches, we welcome any contribution that addresses the causes or outcomes of conflicts in a measurable way, including archaeological, historical, and epigraphical studies. Our goal is to explore conflicts through a broad spectrum of approaches, ensuring inclusivity for both modeling and non-modeling perspectives.

Key themes for this session include:
– Data Selection for Models: Identifying and interpreting indicators of escalation and de-escalation within their socio-political contexts.
– Model Construction Methods: Exploring both quantitative and qualitative approaches, and how they can be used either separately or in combination through case studies.
– Comparing Models: Working toward the development of common frameworks for conflict model comparability.
Presentations are scheduled for 15 minutes plus 5 minutes of discussion. Poster presentations are also possible. Abstracts (up to 2,500 characters, including spaces) may include up to 5 references and should be submitted via the conference website: www.kielconference.uni-kiel.de by 31st October 2024.
