The Cairo Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) offers two 6-months research grants starting on 01.10.2026 (conditional on the availability of sufficient budget funds).
The research grant strives to promote scholarly projects that meet with the interests of the German Archaeological Institute’s Cairo Department and directly link up with the tasks of the latter. The scholarships are awarded for conducting a well-defined, independent research project linked to the region Luxor/Thebes that aim to make a significant scientific contribution along the lines of the DAI. The applicants should have first experiences with stays in Egypt (e.g. participation in excavations, volunteering in a scientific institution) and basic knowledge of colloquial arabic. The result of the grant is a research product in the form of a publication.
The majority of the duration of these scholarships should be spent at the German House in Qurna/Luxor (Egypt). The German House in Qurna/Luxor with its library is intended to provide ideal conditions for scientific work and for international networking. In order to promote scientific exchange during the fellowship period, it is planned that the applicants present the research project in an evening lecture for colleagues in ancient studies and neighbours of the Theban region. The scholarships include accommodation (no meal service – room only) in the German House in Qurna/Luxor.
German and foreign researchers holding a degree and a PhD in the field of Egyptology or a closely related discipline are invited to apply. Remuneration is set at min. 2.050.-€ per month for PostDocs.
Applications are accepted in German or English. The application documents, addressed to the directors of the Cairo department of the DAI, may be submitted as a single pdf-file to [email protected] no later than 31.03.2026.
