Participating in the 2026 Landscape Archaeology fieldwork in Avdira

Registration is now open for students and researchers interested in participating in the Archaeological and Geoarchaeological fieldwork that will take place in the region of Xanthi (Greece) during July and September 2026. The campaigns are part of the MEDLANDS project. Participants will join a multi-disciplinary team investigating the long-term History of Mediterranean landscapes and participate in intensive archaeological survey, archaeological excavations and palaeoenvironmental research.

Archaeological and Geoarchaeological campaigns. Avdira 2026
-What: Intensive and multidisciplinary survey campaign in the region of Xanthi (East-Macedonia & Thrace). The focus is diachronic but with special interest in the period between the Iron Age and the Roman conquest.
-When: Three turns 1) 20-31 July: Intensive Archaeological Survey; 2) 1-11 September:
Excavation of Trial trenches & Palaeoenvironmental coring; 3) 14-25 September: Intensive
Archaeological Survey & Palaeoenvironmental coring.
-Who: the fieldwork is part of a project of the Ephorate for Antiquities of Xanthi in collaboration with the Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Crete, the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences of Montpellier (ISEM) and the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICAC). The survey, coring and excavations will be directed by researchers from ICAC, ISEM and U. of Crete.
-Work: Participants will obtain training and practical experience in 1) Fieldwalking and recording of archaeological data with GIS systems; 2) Archaeological excavation; 3) coring techniques (percussion corer); 4) Laboratory processing and analysis of archaeological material and sedimentary cores will take place in the afternoons. Participants will have free time on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
-Practical details: Accommodation provided in shared rooms (2-3 people max. / room) in an equipped guesthouse in Avdira. The organization will provide one complete meal x day and food for the field. Participants will have access to the kitchen for the rest. The organization will cover the cost of bus and train tickets to Xanthi for all the participants, and will take care of the transportation during the campaign.
