The exhibition “Greece and the Routes to the West. The Shipwreck in the Otranto Channel (Italy)” will be on show in the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens from June 16 until September 15, 2026.

The exhibition brings to light one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean in recent years: the shipwreck discovered in the Channel of Otranto during works related to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). The recovery of the cargo from a depth of 780m yielded more than three hundred fifty pottery vessels.

The exhibition features ninety Corinthian ceramic vessels dating to the 7th century BC, highlighting Corinth’s role as a major commercial and cultural center and shedding light on the maritime networks that connected Greece with the West.

The exhibition is organized into thematic sections focusing on the ancient maritime routes, the ship’s cargo, and the discovery and recovery of the wreck. It is complemented by multimedia applications and virtual reconstructions.

This is the first comprehensive presentation of the finds, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore a discovery of global significance and gain insight into the modern methods of underwater archaeology.
