Abstract
Sophocles’ masterpiece and its perennially compelling heroine have, since G.W.F. Hegel, provided – and continue to provide – fertile ground for reflection in modern and contemporary philosophy. This talk aims to reconsider the concepts of practical wisdom, obligation, forgiveness, and ecological responsibility through a comparative engagement with some of the inexhaustible interpretations of Antigone offered by major 20th- and 21st-century thinkers, including Simone Weil, Martin Heidegger, Hans Jonas, Paul Ricœur, Martha Nussbaum, Luce Irigaray, Adriana Cavarero, and Mary C. Rawlinson.
