Abstract

Aegean Bronze Age warfare has drawn increasing scholarly attention over the past 25 years. During this period, conferences, workshops, research papers, and publications have significantly enriched our understanding of prehistoric violence and warfare in the Aegean. Research has focused on iconography, weapon technology, literary sources, fortifications, and defensive features, with more recent emphasis on human skeletal material. In recent years, the economic aspects of warfare have also gained well-deserved attention, raising questions such as: What resources are required to produce high-quality bronze weapons? Who supplies the alloy? What are the logistics of constructing monumental fortification walls? How is warfare connected to trade?

This lecture aims to provide an update on current approaches to the study of warfare in prehistoric Greece, address methodological challenges and limitations, and explore how recent discoveries and the reassessment of older material contribute to our understanding of warfare practices in mainland Greece, Crete, and the Aegean islands.

Biographical Information

Angelos Papadopoulos is an archaeologist and faculty member at College Year in Athens. He received his PhD from the University of Liverpool, where he studied the iconography of warfare in the Bronze Age Aegean. He has published extensively on the topic of warfare, yet his research in the Eastern Mediterranean has led him to develop an active interest in the cultural interconnections between the Aegean, Cyprus, and the Levant, with a focus on trade, art exchange, and diplomacy.

Angelos has co-organized four international conferences in Athens, Dublin, and Nicosia and has conducted fieldwork in Greece, Cyprus, and the UK. He is currently working on the publication of Mycenaean and Cypriot pottery from the sites of Enkomi, Kourion, and Tell el-Hesi while preparing a short monograph on Aegean Bronze Age warfare.
