The Netherlands Institute at Athens invites you to the 13th hybrid seminar of the research project PYTHAGORAS BYZANTINUS – Pythagoras and Pythagoreanism in Byzantine Thought and Culture. The project organized by the Research Center for Greek Philosophy of the Academy of Athens in collaboration with the LEM (UMR 8584).
Fabio Pagani of the Catholic University of America, Washington (DC), USA will give a lecture on “Pletho and Pythagoras”.
Abstract
In this talk, I am going to address the relation between the Byzantine intellectual Georgios Gemistos Pletho (ca 1355–1452 [?]) and the ancient philosopher Pythagoras. In order to do so, I am going to look at a number of references to Pythagoras that Gemistos made in his own writings. Secondly, I am also presenting the Pythagorean material that I have found in Gemistos Pletho’s working copies of Plato and, where possible, the other sources that may have affected Gemistos’ view of Pythagoras and his doctrines.
