The inscriptions included in the new IOSPE constitute the combined production of about 33 ancient Greek communities that dwelled along the Northern Coast of the Black Sea, among them the communities of Tyras, Nikonion, Borysthenes (Berezan), Olbia, Kalos Limen, Kerkinitis, Neapolis Scythica, Chersonesos, Kharax, Theodosia, Kimmerikon, Kytaia, Akra, Nymphaion, Iluraton, Tyritake, Zenonos Chersonesos, Patraeus, Tyrambe, Kepoi, Phanagoreia, Hermonasse, Korokondame, Gorgippia, Labris, Bata, and Tanais.

Byzantine Inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea

The team of the international collaborative project IOSPE: Ancient Inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea will mark the launch of the first collection, Byzantine Inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea, authored by Dr Andrey Vinogradov (University “Higher School of Economics”, Moscow).

A panel of speakers, including the author and project directors Dr Irene Polinskaya (Department of Classics, King’s College London), Dr Askold  Ivantchik (Université de Bordeaux) and Dr Gabriel Bodard (Department of Digital Humanities, King’s College London) will present the online publication of the collection. The presentation will also include an assessment by Byzantine specialists.

This project is funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
