The Acceptance of Coins by Foreign States and the Question of Imitations is the topic to be addressed at the first of the 2022-23 Numismatic Meetings.
The Speaker is Sophia Kremydi, of the Institute of Historical Research/NHRF.
Abstract
Ancient Epigraphic Sources determine that, with few exceptions, civic issues were accepted only within the territory of the state that issued them. However, coins traveled, and the patterns of their movement changed throughout the centuries. Furthermore, coin types could be imitated by other issuing authorities, indicating that the originals must have been used for payments. This, somewhat contradictory, evidence shall be discussed through specific examples.
The meeting will take place in hybrid form, in person, and via Zoom.
