Ionian Khora: Fragility and Resilience of Rural Landscapes in Ionia

Wednesday, January 18, 2023

The Swedish Institute at Athens invites you to a lecture by Assoc.Prof. Elif Koparal (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), Project director of Urla-Çeşme Peninsula Archaeological Survey Project (KLASP) and Co-Director of Klazomenai Excavations (Urla-İzmir), entitled:

“Ionian Khora: Fragility and Resilience of Rural Landscapes in Ionia”.

Abstract

Archaeological practice in Ionia has a long history that mainly focused on the urban
centres and monuments. Within the last three decades, owed to the archaeological
surveys conducted at rural landscapes we have a better understanding of rural lives
and landscapes of Ionia. KLASP is a survey project dedicated to exploring the khorai
around Klazomenai, Teos, Erythrai and Lebedos diachronically. The lecture will
present the results of the KLASP project and a holistic assessment of evidence from
rural territories in Ionia.

The lecture takes place on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 19.00 (Athens) in a hybrid format with live presence at the Swedish Institute at Athens, Mitseon 9, and online via Zoom.
