The archaeology of piracy in antiquity

October 5-6, 2023

International Hybrid Conference “The archaeology of piracy in antiquity”
Athens, October 5-6, 2023.

Piracy is a complex and highly dynamic phenomenon, affecting many areas of human life, such as political, social and settlement organization, economy, demography, art, warfare and shipping technology. Therefore, it surprising to note that only few efforts have been made to investigate the phenomenon from an archaeological perspective. The conference attempts to reverse this situation bringing together scholars of different periods and regions focusing on the phenomenon of piracy and its archaeological investigation.

The conference focuses on pirate activity in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean from prehistoric to Roman times.

The conference will take place at the “Ioannis Drakopoulos” Amphitheater in the Central Building (Propylaea) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
