This paper explores the beekeeping industry in ancient Crete, from the Bronze Age through late antiquity. This research is based substantially on the archaeological evidence, in the form of reputed ceramic beehives and related equipment, but also considers ancient texts and context data from possible apiaries. It addresses issues such as the existence of Minoan ceramic beehives, influences from foreign apiculture, morphology of beekeeping equipment and regional preferences, and the place of honey and wax in the ancient Greek economy.
