The third research seminar under the aegis of the brand new Leeds Centre for Ancient World & Classical Reception Studies will take place on Thursday 31st October, 17:00-18:30 UK time. Dr Roger Brock will be speaking on ‘Ancient Greek Viticulture.’
Abstract
Although wine makes up one third of the ‘Mediterranean triad’, the business of growing grapes in ancient Greece is poorly understood, and there is no substantial study of the topic in English. In this talk, work in progress drawn from a larger project on wine in ancient Greece, I aim to pull together the rather scattered evidence from literature and material culture and offer a synoptic account of the practicalities of viticulture in the archaic and classical Greek world.
The seminar will take place on campus in Michael Sadler 2.29, (https://www.accessable.co.uk/
