Seminar 8
Dr Anna Reeve on “Beyond Dots on a map: making use of Classical museum collections.”
“Classical antiquities have the ability to spark joy and wonder, and to open up conversations about ancient and modern worlds. Encounters between objects and people, facilitated by museum professionals, offer an important way of making Classics accessible to broader audiences, and generating interest in antiquity. In this talk I will outline the work of the Classical Collections Network – a Subject Specialist Network which aims to promote and support the use of classical collections and to help overcome barriers to access. I will discuss progress on assessing what’s out there and sharing information on publicly accessible objects and collections, and the scope to build on existing museum data to improve the knowledge base on which public engagement rests. I will also discuss the CCN’s activities which bring together people working with classical collections in UK museums to share knowledge, experiences, and best practice. While the academic and museum sectors continue to face considerable challenges, the potential of ancient objects to create connections and generate insights remains undiminished, and can be unlocked through joint working and mutual support.”
Dr Anna Reeve is an Early Career Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies, University of London, and teaches Classical Studies for the Open University. Her PhD from the University of Leeds examined the ancient Cypriot collection belonging to Leeds Museums and Galleries, tracing object itineraries and connecting them to local and global histories. Her research interests focus on material culture from the ancient world, especially Cyprus, and its reception in the UK from the nineteenth century onwards.
