Ceramic Assemblages from the 1960 Excavation at Koroni in Attica

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

The upcoming Meli lecture entitled “Re-Excavating Fortifications: Contextualizing Ceramic Assemblages from the 1960 Excavation at Koroni in Attica” features the ASCSA’s Melanie Godsey. Respondant is Guy Ackermann EFA.

Abstract

One of the few excavated fortifications in eastern Attica, Koroni has provided crucial data points for Attic ceramic typologies and the narrative of the Chremonidean War
over the last 60 years. Although debate continues concerning the circumstances of the construction and occupation of the site, the primary mode of scrutiny has been
chronological – to expand or shift the time period in which objects and structures could have been used. No one has yet reassessed the finds in their archaeological context,
situated the full corpus of ceramic material within a broader regional setting, and used that information to assess the purpose of the site. A re-evaluation of the material
collected in 1960 has, therefore, been long overdue. I present the excavated ceramic corpus in its archaeological context to shape new questions concerning community
organization at Koroni and the function of the site, and conclude with a glimpse into Koroni’s role within the military and economic crosscurrents of the region.
