Thursday, January 26, 2023

The Swedish Institute at Athens and the Digital Periegesis Project (Uppsala University) welcome you to a workshop by Anna Foka, Elton Barker, Brady Kiesling, Kyriaki Konstantinidou and Linda Talatas, entitled

“Gazetteering Pausanias: Athens and Beyond”.

The workshop takes place as a hybrid event on Thursday, January 26, 2023, 17.00–19.00 (Athens), physically at the Swedish Institute at Athens and digitally on Zoom.

Abstract

The ongoing Digital Periegesis (Pausanias) project, based in Uppsala with the support
of the Swedish Research Council and Swedish Institute in Athens, is finalizing its
annotation of Pausanias’ places, people, events, objects, and quotations using
Recogito. Our planned next step is to generate an open gazetteer of Pausanias’ places
using Wikidata, linking to existing gazetteers (e.g. Pleiades, ToposText,
DAI/Arachne) and Judith Binder’s Magnum Opus (at Dipylon.org). Since this project’s
inception, and a preliminary meeting of interested parties in 2018, substantial
progress has been made by the Athens scholarly community on digital resources
relevant to such a gazetteer. We hope you will join us to take stock and share visions
for the future of mapping Greek antiquity.
