In classical antiquity, “treasures” were small buildings richly sculpted intended to house precious objects. Now, exhibited for the first time outside Greece, 29 surviving fragments of the Treasure of the People of Marseilles (the Treasury of Massalia) are on view in the Centre de la Vieille Charité in Marseilles, the 2013 European Capital of Culture.
Thanks to digital technology, visitors can discover the reconstruction of this historic building in 3D and be immersed in the archaeological excavations that have enabled this reconstitution.
In the surrounding halls there is an exhibition of photographs taken by Magnum artist Josef Koudelka, entitled “Vestiges 1991-2012”.
