Following the publication of M.I. Finley: an ancient historian and his impact (Cambridge, 2016), Prof. Robin Osborne, current holder of the Chair in Ancient History at Cambridge which Finley held, and Dr Dorothy Thompson, who was a pupil of Finley, discuss what exactly it was that made Finley the most prominent ancient historian in the world in the twentieth century. They review Finley as scholar, teacher, writer, broadcaster, and educational mover and shaker, and assess the role played by his politics and his personal charisma in his success.
