Plataiai – A ‘Forgotten’ Polis

Wednesday, November 27, 2019

Priv.-Doz. Mag. Dr. Andreas Konecny (Institute for Archeology, University of Graz) will present the topic “Plataiai – A ‘Forgotten’ Polis”.

Abstract

Except of lending its name to the battle in 479 BC, and a short spell of research conducted by American scholars in the 1890s, Plataiai might well have deserved to be called a »forgotten« Polis – that is until a joint project of the Ephorate of Boiotia and the ÖAI, with support from the Fitch Laboratory at the BSA, commenced at the site. It yielded a wealth of data which now allows to set the beginning of Plataiai’s history in the Neolothic, follow its development through the Bronze and Iron Ages and to draw a clear and quite detailed picture of the polis‘ fortifications as well as its internal structure during the Hellenistic and Roman epochs.
