The Athens cluster of the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), of which the British Council is a member, is participating in International Museum Day 2014 (IMD) with a one day-conference exploring the role of museums in shaping a European identity: “Regional Museums and European Identity. Past and Future.”
The conference will look at the relationship and interaction between regional – and often multicultural – forms of expression and common European values by highlighting the social, cultural and economic issues of relevance to museums in the region.
Taking this year’s IMD theme Museum Collections Make Connections as its starting point, the conference will invite academics and museum professionals from regional museums across Europe to share their views and proposals regarding the role of regional museums in the future, both for their communities and for a wider European audience.
Michael Cooke, Arts Council England, will talk about the Renaissance in the Regions programme and will examine the impact of a £40m investment in renewing regional museums.
