Religious Secularity at Byblos

Tuesday, December 17, 2024

We are pleased to share the streaming Teams Link for the workshop “Religious Secularity at Byblos: a Laboratory Synthesising the Materiality of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Middle Bronze Age”, Pisa 17th December, from 9 a.m. CET, organised by Professor Gianluca Miniaci and Camilla Saler.

The workshop is organised within the frame of the project Godscapes: Modeling Second Millennium BCE Polytheisms in the Eastern Mediterranean (PRIN 2020, PI: Nicola Laneri, Catania University; Unit coordinator: Gianluca Miniaci, University of Pisa).

Since the Early Bronze Age, Byblos has been a melting pot of cultures and religions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its material culture reflects the blending of various traditions, fostering innovation and new identities. Middle Bronze Age artifacts showcase a fusion of
Levantine, Egyptian, and other regional influences, blurring cultural boundaries. This multicultural environment nurtured a flexible and inclusive religious landscape, allowing for the coexistence and merging of different practices and deities. This workshop delves
into the religious diversity of Middle Bronze Age Byblos, exploring how it embodied globalization and generated unique cultural expressions, social norms, and identities.
