Terracotta Sculpture

Friday, May 15, 2015

The Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the British School at Athens organize a workshop on “Terracotta Sculpture: New Discoveries & New Perspectives.”

New discoveries have overturned the old belief that Archaic terracotta sculpture was prevalent only in Corinth and the Peloponnese. There are now important examples from all regions of mainland Greece, including new types of terracotta decoration on temples, such as figural relief metopes and pedimental plaques. The time has come for a new synthesis, overview, and discussion. This workshop brings together scholars to present evidence for a new understanding of the phenomenon of terracotta sculpture in Greece during the Archaic period, with the presentation of  new discoveries of terracotta sculpture alongside re-evaluations of older finds.
