You are cordially invited to the lecture of “THE CIRCLE, Dialogues for Greek and Roman Architecture” by Guy Ackermann, PhD, Membre scientifique de l’École française d’Athènes; the topic of the lecture is ” The Hellenistic Gymnasium of Eretria. Ongoing Architectural Research”.
The lecture will be held in English at the Swedish Institute at Athens, Mitseon 9, 11742 Athens.
Abstract
The city of Eretria offers two examples of gymnasia, one of the Classical period next to the harbour (the ‘South Palaestra’) and another of the Hellenistic period at the foot of the acropolis (the ‘Gymnasium’). This lecture will focus on the results from fieldwork carried out by the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece (ESAG) from 2015 to 2019. It yielded important new insights into the chronology, architecture, and functional analysis of the Hellenistic ‘Gymnasium’. The architectural study is still in progress, but the invitation by Κύκλος /The Circle is a great opportunity to present and discuss its first results.
