Fieldwork in Iraq courtesy of the University of Athens

Greek archaeologists, under the direction of lecturer Dr. Kostas Kopanias, will be traveling to Iraq in order to explore sites near Erbil (ancient Arvila). The Greek team, working under the auspices of the University of Athens (Department of History and Archaeology), will excavate a Chalcolithic site and they will survey another, identified probably with the ancient Gaugamela Battlefield. Fieldwork is set to start April 2011.
