The character of nineteenth – century Greek funerary sculpture is still impossible to define. Before we can proceed with such research, a photographic corpus must be compiled, so that we can study the material in its sum total and in all its variety.

However, even at this stage, some characteristics can be discerned. Attempts have been made to survey aspects such as material, style and iconography in connection with economic attitudes and socio – ideological tendencies. Consequently a preliminary attempt of thematical classification is proposed.
