7th Symposium on Archaeometry of the HSA

The 7th Symposium on Archaeometry of the HSA “Archaeology-Archaeometry: 30 years later” will take place on October 9-12, 2019, in Athens.

The topics of the Symposium will be Dating and Paleoenvironment, Geophysical Prospection, Ceramics and Vitreous materials, Archaeometallurgy, Stones, plasters and Pigments, Biomaterials and bioarchaeology and archaeoseismology.

The Hellenic Society of Archaeometry (HSA) announces the organization of the Seventh (7th) Symposium on Archaeometry entitled “Archaeology-Archaeometry: 30 years later”. The Symposium will take place in Athens from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 October 2019. The Symposium is a continuation of the six (6) previous respective events that the HSA successfully organized in the past. It is expected that this meeting will contribute to scientific brainstorming, dissemination of original knowledge, dialogue between experts in several individual disciplines, and training. The 1st Symposium on Archaeometry of the HSA (26-28/01 /1990) had the emblematic title “Linking Archaeology and Archaeometry”. Shortly before the completion of thirty years after this—first in Greece—organized meeting between archaeologists and archaeological scientists, the 7th Symposium on Archaeometry of the HSA offers the opportunity to evaluate long-term interdisciplinary research collaborations and their outcomes, to reconsider and to assess employed methodologies, to solve long-standing problems and to investigate future perspectives and trends in this discipline.

The 7th Symposium of the HSA encompasses the following fields of study: a) dating and the palaeoenvironment, b) geophysical prospection, c) ceramic and vitreous materials, d) ancient and prehistoric metallurgy, e) stones-with an emphasis on marble-, mortars and pigments, and g) biomaterials-bioarchaeology. In addition, a special thematic session will be devoted to the consideration of issues around archaeoseismology, geoarchaeology and accuracy in absolute dating.

Although emphasis is given to the presentation of original archaeometric studies that surround issues of the Greek region, continental and insular, the Organizing Committee would also welcome an enhanced international character for the Symposium with papers referred to the broader Eastern Mediterranean region, including Cyprus.

The official languages of the Symposium will be Greek and English, similarly to the respective events held in the past.

The Organizing Committee will arrange, especially for the support and promotion of young scientists (graduate students and post-doctoral scholars), discounts or waivers of the registration fee, awards, a possible special session etc.

More relevant information (abstracts, author guidelines, registration fees, interim deadlines etc.) will be provided in the forthcoming First Circular and in the ones that will follow.

The HSA calls its members and the hundreds of its distinguished subscribers to scientific commitment and involvement with sound original papers. Our intention is to conduct another important Symposium on Archaeometry, worthy of its renowned tradition as documented in the proceedings of the previously held events.
