Dean of the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw announces a Call for candidates for 2 positions of postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Ancient History, Faculty of History, University of Warsaw in Sonata Bis NCN research project “Thinking of Thinking: Conceptual Metaphors of Cognition in the Plutarchan Corpus”.

Post-doc 1

Full-time employment planned for 12 months (extendable up to 60 months altogether upon positive opinion of the Principal Investigator).
Planned gross gross basic salary: 120,000 PLN per year.
Employment is possible from 1 October 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

I. Person specification: essential criteria
1. Ph.D. degree obtained in the year of employment in the project or within 7 years before 1 January 2022 (this period may be extended pursuant to the Types of costs in research projects funded by the National Science Centre). Ph.D. degree must be awarded by an entity other than the University of Warsaw or a continuous and evidenced post-doctoral fellowship must be completed of at least 10 months in another institution than the host institution for the project and in another country than the one in which a PhD degree has been obtained.
2. Experience with research on the 2nd-century CE Greek literature, history and culture (in particular, the output of Plutarch of Chaeronea) documented by relevant publications.
3. At least very good knowledge of ancient Greek, in particular of the 2nd-century CE period.
4. Basic knowledge of cognitive linguistics and Lakoff and Johnson’s cognitive metaphor theory in particular.
5. Modern languages: fluency in English, and ability to read in French/German/Italian are necessary.

II. Scope of work
1. Research on the corpus of Plutarch’s writings in order to reconstruct his folk theory of the mind.
2. Processing the corpus of cognitive metaphors of cognition according to methodology developed within the project.
3. Participation in the analysis of the evidence collected.
4. Submission of at least one paper to a high-ranking international journal, discussing cognitive metaphors of cognition/folk theory of the mind in the Plutarchan corpus and their relationship with Greek history and culture of the 2nd century CE.
5. Dissemination of results of the project at international conferences and seminars.
6. Participation in the weekly team meetings (in person or via video communicators) discussing the work progress.

III. Selection procedure
• Application deadline: 19 June 2022.
• The results will be announced by late July 2022, and candidates will be informed by e-mail.
• After a formal assessment of the applications, the committee may make a preliminary evaluation of the applications and on this basis select a shortlist of candidates admitted to further stages of the procedure.
• The recruitment process follows the procedure determined in the Statute of the University of Warsaw and the relevant rules of the University of Warsaw and Faculty of History.

2. Regular presentation of obtained research results at workshops and scientific conferences.
3. Publication of results in international scientific journals and publications.
4. Participation in the organization of events related to the research project, such as conferences and workshops, both scientific and popularizing science.
5. Organizing and regularly participating in research team meetings; collaborating with the PI and other team members.
