Description

The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a visiting full-time faculty position for the 2026–2027 academic year to begin in August 2026. This position is a one-year visiting position as replacement for professors on leave. We seek a colleague who can contribute courses on ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, and/or other ancient (prior to 330 BCE) North African or West Asian cultures to our curriculum. Applicants may specialize in archaeological, art historical, or textual evidence. The ability to offer courses on more than one ancient culture is desirable. The candidate should propose at least three courses, and at least two of the three should be offered at the introductory level. Classics courses range in size from 16–25 students. The College values innovative and inclusive approaches to teaching and provides resources to faculty to support teaching practices.

The courses proposed may be historical or topical; interdisciplinary and cross-cultural connections are welcome. The candidate will have the opportunity to teach at least two of these courses twice, allowing for refinement and development of courses during the
two-semester term of the position.

Visiting full-time faculty teach 3 courses each semester and are eligible to apply for support to present at a conference or attend a professional development program
through the Provost’s Supplemental Research Fund. The College will support reimbursement of relocation costs within its published policies. The College offers full
benefits and a salary of $70,000.

The College will not support H-1B visa applications that require the $100,000 employer fee.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching and inclusive pedagogies as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in a relevant field. Prior undergraduate teaching experience of ancient cultures is desirable.

Please append to your teaching statement proposals for at least three courses you would offer, of which at least two should be at the introductory level. The description for each course, including the name, level, major learning goals and content of the course, should be 250–300 words.
