A thousand doors

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May 2014

NEON and the Whitechapel Gallery invite you to celebrate “A thousand doors,” an exhibition curated by Whitechapel’s Director, Iwona Blazwick, OBE. At the Gennadius Library and Gardens.

The exhibition will serve as a major survey of contemporary art that explores how the sculptural object can be a portal to time travel, to scientific and philosophical enquiry, and to subjectivity and imagination. Inside the Library will be works that explore the book as both subject and sculptural object. Outside, located throughout the formal gardens, will be sculptural mise-en-scenes that give material form to imaginary worlds.

A Thousand Doors will include specially commissioned works by four generations of Greek artists: Kostas Ioannidis, Valentina Karga, Jannis Kounellis, Nikos Navridis and Paky Vlassopoulou. Their new pieces will be joined by seminal works created by an international roster of artists: Edward Allington, Matthew Barney, Christian Boltanski, Pavel Büchler, Michael Dean, Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani, Ceal Floyer, Isa Genzken, Shuruq Harb, Nigel Henderson, Georg Herold, Susan Hiller, Hannah Höch, John Latham, Mark Manders, Juan Muñoz, Giuseppe Penone, Elizabeth Price, Michael Rakowitz, Annie Ratti, Meriç Algün Ringborg, Dieter Roth, Daniel Silver, Francis Upritchard, Adrián Villar Rojas, Jane and Louise Wilson.

Cocktails in the garden on Saturday 3 May, 7.00 pm.
