The ‘Spartan Mirage’ is the subject of the next Sparta Live event, July the 9th, 5-6 pm. (British standard time).
‘Sparta’ and ‘Spartans’ conjure up a number of conventional images and associations. A key issue for historians is seeking to understand how much the image of Sparta which we receive from ancient authors (usually Athenian) simplifies, idealizes, or distorts the historical reality. How much of what we know about Sparta represents actually a ‘Spartan Mirage’?
