Wartime Sexual Violence in Roman Conquest Art

Tuesday, February 18, 2025

You are warmly invited to the upcoming Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference Webinar by Kelsey S. Madden, titled “Representations of Wartime Sexual Violence in Roman Conquest Art”.

Abstract

In Roman conquest iconography from the 1st century BCE to the 2nd century CE, captive women and children served as a potent symbol of the complete destruction of non-Roman families. Wartime sexual violence depicted in this context is often interpreted primarily as a binary metaphor for Romes’s penetration of foreign lands and peoples. This lecture aims to move beyond this limited perspective by exploring how Queer and Feminist New Materialism theoretical frameworks can be applied to study how sexual imperialist discourse constructs and reinforces power dynamics through relief sculpture.

This investigation reveals how the intricate dynamics of sexual violence were used as a tool of subjugation. Ultimately, the lecture seeks to encourage a reevaluation of depictions of sexual violence in Roman conquest art that reflect bodily and gendered vulnerability while constructing the lived experience of enslavement.

The webinar will take place on Zoom/
