What more can you say about the Parthenon sculptures?

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

Alumni, students, staff and guests are warmly invited to this year’s Buchan Memorial Lecture, to be given by our esteemed guest speaker, Professor Tom Harrison, Keeper of Greece and Rome at the British Museum. The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and a chance to meet the speaker.

Tom writes: ‘Museums, in the phrase of Wayne Modest, are places to “imagine better futures”. This lecture will try to look beyond the elephant in the room (i.e. the physical location of the sculptures) to ask what a better future might look like for the Parthenon sculptures. What stories might we tell about the Parthenon’s ancient context, if it were not for that that single dominating issue? What might we say about its complex 2,500-year history and the sculptures’ transport to London? And how might museum displays, in London or Athens (or online), better serve the legacy of ancient Athens?’

The event is free of charge, but you are strongly encouraged to register here to ensure your seat in the auditorium and place at the reception.

Online attendance will be possible and a Teams link made available on this page closer to the event. You do not need to apply for a ticket if you wish to attend online.
