Many colonies had been founded in Libya by the ancient Greeks. Tripolis, the present capital of that country, still maintains its ancient Greek name. One thousand kilometers to the East, Pentapolis was located.”As its name indicates, it was created by the union of five Greek poleis(cities). The most important Greek colony however in North Africa was Cyrene which had been founded in 631 BC by settlers from the island of Thera. Many Greek architectural monuments have survived and in the Museum of the capital a number of beautiful works of Greek art are exhibited. It is also worth mentioning that Greek speaking inhabitants still exist today in the present village Marsa Sousi that lies in the location of the ancient city Apollonia.
