The art of stonecarving has a long and rich tradition on Lemnos; the rocky mountains of the island have always supplied the necessary raw material in abundance. Unfortunately, this traditional art has almost completely vanished.The various creations of the stonecarvers, however, who worked with inspiration and excessive artistry for the embellishment of churches, mansions, funerary monuments and Heroa, bridges, fountains etc. These craftsmen still remain witnesses of its passed glory. From the great number of popular stonecarvers, who were active periodically on Lemnos, oral tradition has only preserved some of their names.
