The Children’s Museum was founded in Boston in 1913, and even today is considered an avant-garde institution. Learning is combined with play. On the “Giant’s Desk” all objects have twelve times their natural size and children can for example climb over the telephone on the desk. In other rooms in the museum, children learn the history of red Indians, in the “grandparents’ house” they are shown objects belonging to the past century, or simply by playing with water, children find out about its properties. In the section called “what if you couldn’t?” children have their eyes bound shut or use an artificial limb in order to better understand how life is for handicapped children.
