The choice of judges and lords by the drawing of lots is one of the topics of scientific interest among historians and archaeologists. Literary sources indicate that this procedure was transferred by the city of Athens to certain cities, to be used as a necessary stratagem when the democratic regime was being established there. It is adopted by other Greek cities that influenced by Athens borrowed this procedure and then applied it with minor differences; or, finally, the drawing of lots was also exercised in cities with a tradition in similar regimes or holigarchical ones, where it was radically altered so as to serve the state mechanisms.
