On December 11, 2014, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens will host a lecture given by Kevin Daly (Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Classical Studies, ASCSA and Associate Professor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies), entitled “A Sacred Law from the Athenian Agora”.

Professor Daly will discuss and present an inscribed sacred regulation found in the excavations of the Athenian Agora. The inscription, which likely dates to the 4th or 3rd centuries B.C., enumerates items to be set out for a rite and then prescribes actions to be taken. The text includes mention of several types of sacrificial cakes and also directs the invitation of a divinity. Unique in many ways, this exciting and challenging document provides exceptional new evidence for cult practice in Athens.
