The ancient theatres of Thera and Lindos are to be restored according to a recent decision of the Prefecture Council of South Aegean.
The ancient theatre of Lindos in Rhodes, dating to the 4th century BC, used to host 2000 guests and is connected to the ancient Dionysian festival of Sminthia. Of the ancient structure only the elements carved in stone – the orchestra and the central part of the spectators’ area – survive. As for the Thera theatre, in Santorini, it is situated to the NE side of the Agora of the ancient city of Thera. The restoration work, clearance and excavation of the two sites will cost an initial amount of 200.000 Euros which will be given after the signing of two contracts, divided into two equal parts of 100.000 Euros.
