The Department of History, Politics and Philosophy of Manchester Metropolitan University is seeking to appoint a lecturer to contribute to its research, undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision in Ancient History.

The Department welcomes applications from those with specialisms in any period of the ancient world broadly defined (pre-Historic, Classical, Late Antique, Byzantine). Specific research interests in the history or archaeology of youth or childhood would be an advantage, as the post will align closely with the work of the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies (MCYS), a cross-disciplinary research centre which aims to be a centre of expertise for the use of participatory research with children and young people.

Established in 2014, MCYS is located in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and has, over the last three years, generated over £800,000 of external income developing research and knowledge exchange projects that mobilise participatory methodologies. This income has come from a range of prestigious and ground-breaking research projects funded by the ESRC, AHRC, Leverhulme and government bodies (http://www2.mmu.ac.uk/mcys/).

The Department is collegial with an emphasis on mutual support, organised around the principle of working together as a team to achieve the University’s strategic objectives. The Department offers a stimulating environment for an exceptional scholar along with an excellent level of staff development and research support. Its History Research Centre showcases and supports thematic research strands, including specialisms in histories of youth, gender and sexuality: http://www2.mmu.ac.uk/research/our-research/arts-and-humanities/history/. Current expertise in Ancient History and Archaeology includes: Community archaeology; Iron Age archaeology/Roman Republic; archaic/classical Greek history and military psychology; and Graeco-Roman Egypt/Roman Empire and ancient childhood.

The lecturer will have a background in Ancient History/Archaeology, with particular focus on childhood or youth. He/she will effectively and enthusiastically prepare and deliver original teaching materials informed and led by his/her personal, published research, as well as his/her wide-ranging experience in the field. He/she will deliver high quality, engaging and inspiring teaching in keeping with the Department team’s culture; benefitting his/her students, supporting his/her colleagues, and strengthening the Department’s collective reputation. He/she must also be a scholar with a recognised record of achievement in research as demonstrated by publications that are REF 2021 eligible and world-class in terms of originality, significance and rigour. He/she will have experience in, or a clear plan for, applying for external grants and building external partnerships. As a collegial team-player he/she will have the ability to mentor and nurture the talents of others to the benefit of the Department and University as a whole.

Candidates must be hold a PhD or equivalent (e.g. DPhil, or EdD) in a directly relevant area. Evidence of a strong showing for REF 2021 is also required. The anticipated start date for the successful applicant is July 2018.

For an informal discussion regarding the requirements of the role please contact the Head of the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, Prof. Hannah Smithson ([email protected]) and Dr April Pudsey ([email protected]).

Deadline for applications 22nd February 2018.
