Participation of the Museum of Byzantine Culture in the action week for the promotion of the work of the Archaeological Service in 2019, titled “Archaeology on the Screen”.

The Museum of Byzantine Culture participates in the action week (15-21 April 2019) for the promotion of the multifaceted work of the Archaeological Service with the following actions:

Monday, 15 April at 19:30, Amphitheatre “Stephanos Dragoumis”:

Screening of the film, titled “Return”, which is a production of the Museum of Byzantine Culture. The film, lasting 23 minutes and 8 seconds, with original music and narration in Greek language with English subtitles, connects the history of the Museum of Byzantine Culture to the Byzantine city of Thessaloniki. The Museum of Byzantine Culture was awarded the first (gold) award at the ICCOM International Audiovisual Media Festival for the Museums and Cultural Heritage, organized by AVICOM, ICOM’s International Committee for Audiovisual Media and New Technologies, Picture and Sound, in the category of full-length films for this particular production. The movie, directed by Giorgos Skandalaris, was created for the celebration of 20 years since the first opening of the Museum to the Public (1994-2014).

The director Mr. Giorgos Skandalaris and the Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture Dr. Agathoniki Tsilipakou will speak about this movie. This speech will be followed by a discussion with the audience.

Tuesday, 16 April at 19:30, Amphitheatre “Melina Mercouri”:

Lecture by Mrs. Eleni Stoumpou-Katsamouri, archaeologist and director, titled “Archaeological Stories on the monitor”. It will be a presentation of the history of the archaeological movies since 1930, from when we have the first video recording of archaeological excavations, until the hypermedia age.

Screening of the film, titled “THANKS TO MEMORY. A digital tour with high-definition technology”. The movie is a production of the Archaeological Institute of Macedonian and Thracian Studies. It lasts 15 minutes and 26 seconds, has English subtitles, and is the product of the cooperation of the Museum of Byzantine Culture with the Archaeological Institute of Macedonian and Thracian Studies. It was created for the celebration of the International Museum Day 2012 and deals with the painting of the funerary monuments of the permanent exhibition of the Museum (Gallery 3). It is a pioneering production, which, based on high-definition technology, highlights the iconography, the subjects, art and technique, aesthetic values ​​and symbolism of a particularly important set of funerary mural paintings, dated from the 3rd to the 6th century. Scientific editing, texts, narrative: Dr Agathoniki Tsilipakou, Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
