The International Society for Archaeology, Art and Architecture of Rome (ISAR) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2020 season of its Archaeological Field School in the Roman Forum – The Signum Vortumni Project.

The fifth season of excavations will take place within the imposing remains of the Horrea Agrippiana located at the base of the NW slope of the Palatine Hill.

Despite the central location of the site, within the Parco Archeologico Del Colosseo (https://parcocolosseo.it/en/), there is still much to learn about the pre-Imperial topography of this important area. While the results of recent excavations have been very promising, a great deal of information remains to be uncovered.

This year ISAR will be presenting a sequence of lessons, both in the classroom and on-site, to provide students with the basic skills necessary to discern and document the multiple phases of site use present at the Horrea Agrippiana. Lessons will address the history, topography, and architecture of ancient Rome with the aim of helping students recognize and identify architectural elements and material culture through hands-on training. Further lessons will focus on helping students understand the techniques of stratigraphic investigation, the use of topographic instruments, hand-drawing, and digital documentation. Each of these pedagogic components will combine clear, illustrated instruction by experts in the field with readings, interactive discussions, and practical applications.

The 2020 season will run from June 15th until July 24th. Students will be housed in shared apartments in central Rome.

Applications are due by March 1st, 2020.
