The German classical archaeologist and architectural historian had dedicated decades of work to the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina.
Dr. Schwandner was director of the Department of Architecture at the German Archaeological Institute and a professor at Humboldt University in Berlin.
The professor dedicated his career to the reconstruction of the earlier Temple of Aphaia and the creation of its museum. He also discovered the sanctuary’s connection with Pergamon. The history of ancient Greek architecture was at the center of his long research and led him to excavations in many parts of Greece.
The Archaeology and Arts magazine had the good fortune to meet Dr. Schwandner and enjoy a guided tour with him of the sanctuary of Aphaia and its museum in the town of Aegina. Dr. Schwandner also gave us an interview which was published in issue 128 in December 2018.
