The Petros D. Goneos Memorial Award from the Museum of Cycladic Art

The Museum of Cycladic Art and the Cycladic Art Foundation (New York) are pleased to announce the Petros D. Goneos Memorial Award for Studies on the Culture of the Cyclades, an academic fellowship which is funded by an endowment established in the memory of Petros D. Goneos (1968-2019), former active member and vice president of the Cycladic Art Foundation in New York.

About the Award

The award is destined to encourage, support, and promote high quality research from new researchers who focus on topics related to the culture of the Cyclades from the Neolithic up to the post-Byzantine period (up to 1830) or its perception to the modern times. Proposed research will be approached through disciplines as Archaeology, Anthropology, and Art History, as well as natural and physical sciences.The award is offered annually and covers a single academic year, from September until June. It includes $5,000 given to a single successful applicant or group of applicants with a common project. Payment will be provided as one single sum at the beginning of the academic year in September. Successful applicants are not eligible to apply again for a second year of funding.

Eligibility

Applicants from all countries, pursuing PhD research or having completed their doctorate within the past ten years (after September 01, 2012) are eligible to apply. Applicants are also encouraged to apply for joint collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. In this case, the award amount remains the same for a group versus an individual award winner.

Selection Process

The award will be made by an Advisory Committee of academics and senior scholars appointed by the Museum of Cycladic Art.

The successful candidate/s should:

-Outline clearly and in detail how this award will enable the proposed research and lead to its completion.

-Demonstrate how the outcomes of the project will contribute to the field and promote further research.

-Demonstrate the capability of the researcher/s to achieve the proposed outcomes. This can be proven through their academic achievement, prior publications, and reference letters.

The Museum of Cycladic Art and the Cycladic Art Foundation particularly encourage proposals from researchers who:

-Propose new and pioneering approaches.

-Launch collaborative, interdisciplinary projects.

-Seek to use and develop information technologies.

Application Information

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, February 25, 2022 at midnight (Athens Time). Recommendation letters are due no later than Friday, March 04, 2022 at midnight (Athens Time).

As part of the application process, applicants will send to the Museum of Cycladic Art ([email protected]) two documents in PDF format, including:
-A research proposal of no more than 1,000 words. Bibliographies and references do not count toward the word limit.
-A curriculum vitae documenting qualifications to conduct the proposed research.

Applicants should also provide the names and contact information of two referees who are expected to independently send their reference letters to the Museum of Cycladic Art ([email protected]) by the above-mentioned date (Friday, March 04, 2022). Applicants are requested to initiate and secure the recommendation process by contacting their referees themselves.

Please note:

-Applicants may not write reference letters for other applicants.

-Members of the advisory committee may not write reference letters.

Applicants will receive notification of the committee’s decision in May 2022.

Dissemination of Outcomes & Acknowledgement of Support

The successful candidate/s are required to regularly document the development of their projects and share their work in progress with the Advisory Committee. A written progress report should be submitted at the middle of the academic year (January 2023) and a final report at its end (June 2023). Moreover, the successful candidate/s will be invited to present the work for which the Award has enabled them to complete (in physical presence or remotely) in the Museum of Cycladic Art Cycle of Lectures, and they will be invited to submit a short report of their research in order to be published on the website and the social media of the Museum.

Finally, the successful candidate/s are expected to acknowledge the support they received for their research through this award and mention it in all publications or presentations resulting from their work as Museum of Cycladic Art and Cycladic Art Foundation in New York Petros D. Goneos Memorial Award holders. A copy of the publications resulting from this work should be provided to the Museum of Cycladic Art.
