General statement of responsibilities & duties
The Assistant Curator must be an Egyptologist with a demonstrated background and strong interest in curating a major collection of Egyptian art. This individual should have a concentration and experience in the material culture of Egypt in the first millennium and have a focus on art and archaeology that would support and enrich our understanding of the Museum’s important collections from this period. Awareness of the network of interacting cultures inside and outside Egypt during this time is desirable. Familiarity with the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods is welcome.
Primary responsibilities & duties
-Working with Met colleagues to ensure the proper care and conservation of the collections
-Advancing the research and interpretation of objects in the collection
-Pursuing independent research project(s) ideally based on but not limited to the Museum’s collection and carried out in consultation with the department head
-Creating compelling presentations, both digital and print, that share the collection with the Museum’s diverse audiences
-Playing a full part in various Department and Museum-wide projects, including but not limited to permanent displays, exhibitions, publications, education programming, and revenue-generating activities
-Participating in donor cultivation and engaging in numerous ways with the Department’s donors
-Fostering and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues from other institutions in the U.S., Egypt, and other countries; for example, including but not limited to other members of the scholarly community, collectors, and dealers
-Answering correspondence relating to the collection and assisting the public and visiting scholars
-Assisting with provenance research in the development of the collection
-Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements & qualifications

Experience and Skills
-Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in a museum or academic institution – required
-Demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research on works of art emphasizing either archaeological context, visual studies, or textual analysis – required
-Demonstrated ability to publish Egyptological research in peer-reviewed literature- required
-Ability to maintain precise and careful records – required
-Strong interpersonal skills, particularly when working with donors and the public – required
-Ability to work closely with all staff within the Department as part of a team and with colleagues throughout the Museum as well as in the larger academic community – required
Knowledge and Education
-PhD or equivalent in Egyptology, Art History, or relevant field – required
-Demonstrated scholarly achievement including evidence of original research – required
-Reading knowledge of French and German, and a knowledge of ancient Egyptian – required
