The British School at Athens is delighted to announce that the ‘The Ancient City of Athens’ undergraduate course will take place in 16-22 June 2025.

This is a BSA residential course for UK-based undergraduates on ‘The Ancient City of Athens’. This introduces students to the physical landscape, the history and archaeology of Athens through a series of lectures and tours of the major archaeological sites and museums in Athens and Attica. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of material evidence designed to complement university teaching and to expand their range of knowledge and skills, as well as engage with important concepts such as multitemporality, anastylosis and archaeopolitics, which they can then bring to bear in the final years of their degrees. Teaching is primarily site-based, and focuses on the application of archaeology to the study of the history, language, culture, and anthropology of Greece. It is particularly relevant to university courses on Greek Archaeology, History, and Classics, but includes also the study of later periods, notably the Byzantine world with its role in preserving the Classical tradition.

A provisional course itinerary, further information, and a link to the application portal can be found on the BSA web site (https://www.bsa.ac.uk/courses/the-ancient-city-of-athens/). Completed applications should arrive no later than Saturday 15 March 2025. Please be aware that a request will be sent automatically to the nominated referee only upon submitting the application form, so students should aim to submit their application in good time ahead of the deadline. Referees will not be asked to supply for a full reference letter, but they will be asked to endorse their student’s application with a simple tick-box.
We are happy to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate a range of health and medical needs, to the extent possible given the size of our staffing and the nature of the course. Please write to the Assistant Director at any stage pre- or post-application to discuss possible adjustments.

The course fee is £550, inclusive of accommodation, entrance charges to sites and museums, transport within Greece, half-board, and associate membership of the BSA for one month. A number of bursaries might be available to help students, which will be assigned on the basis of merit and need.

*Students are able to apply to both the ‘Anciet City of Athens’ and the BSA summer school (The Archaeology and Topography of Greece: https://www.bsa.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate-course/), but can only participate in one. Unless specified differently by the applicant, those who apply to both courses will first be considered for the summer school, and then for the City of Athens course.
